Chapter 1: When Reality Betrays You
Disclaimer: I do not own Yugioh nor do I own any books mentioned in this piece of writing. I also do not own the excerpt from The Oracle by Catherine Fisher.
You walk down the hallway of Domino High school, your hands in the pockets of your ankle length, royal blue ‘trench coat’. Really it is the boys’ school jacket, but it is a big size as well as extremely long and extremely wide on you, thus it’s deemed a ‘trench coat’. You do wear the girls’ uniform, but only because your mother wishes it of you. You (like any other self respecting girl – there aren’t many) dislike the shortness of the skirts and thus do wear a ‘trench coat’. The teachers don’t really care, and hey, they have their arms full with the rest of the school.
Truth be told you are invisible to most of the school. You are not looked upon as weird, or outlandish; no you’re perfectly normal, you’re quiet and trained to be polite is all you also tend to stay to the backs of the classrooms. You don’t talk about yourself much nor do you converse with other students frequently. You are polite and answer questions asked of you, but the answers are short, to the point and give no unnecessary information to your high school peers. It is needless to say that you are reserved. Very reserved.
School is a time passer in your life like everything else. You don’t hate it, but in your opinion it holds no significance to your personage what-so-ever. You are a straight A student, but that doesn’t make your life anymore interesting. You live your life, hour by hour, second by second simply waiting for it to end. You aren’t suicidal; no, that isn’t it, it is just that you can’t seem to find the point of meaning in your life. So you let the time pass you by, often going into the depths of your mind, wondering how many hours more you are going to live on this earth for. As this particular thought hits you, your (eye color) eyes curiously glance up to the clock on one side of the hallway that you are now ambulating through.
School is going to start in about an hour and a half. You have gotten here especially early this Monday morning, for lack of anything better to do. Not to mention you had wanted to get out of your house. It is too chaotic for your liking in the late mornings during weekdays. This morning, for once, you had walked out of your home (there was no bus to catch at this hour) in peace, leaving a note for your mother, which informs her that you are going to the Domino High library.
You soon reach a pair of metal doors; they are the entrance to Domino High’s library. You push on the door, and surprisingly it opens. You hadn’t really been expecting this because of the time, but alas you did need an excuse to go to school early and escape the morning pandemonium of your household as was pre-mentioned.
You walk into the library and the librarian looks up from her desk and smiles at you. You nod to her and wander over to your favorite section: Fantasy. You love the library, simply because it allows you to escape the boring reality known as life and enter a feign world of pure imaginative events and creatures. It allows the everyday person, such as you, for once to be in a cycle of imaginative turmoil, tranquility and sensation, something that surely does not happen in one’s everyday life.
As you wander down the aisle of Fantasy books, you note a sound coming from the end of the aisle – pages rustling. Who else would be in the library at this time in the morning? You wonder, oh well, it is none of my concern. You promptly stop yourself in front of a row of books, the titles reading things like: The Oracle, Night of the Dragons, The Merlin Conspiracy, Fire and Hemlock etc. [1]
You pick up the book titled The Oracle, and walk down to the end of the aisle where the chairs, tables and couches are located. As you sit down on a couch you notice another student – Yugi Muoto, you recall his name to be – sitting on the couch across from you. You pay him no other attention and open your book to page one.
[2] ‘The Procession was at least halfway down the terraces before Mirany stopped trembling enough to walk properly. It was hard to see clearly through the eyeslits; the mask was too big, the slits too far apart. And in the sweltering heat, the dust rising in clouds, the flies, the shimmering mirage of the road, everything was bewildering. She flipped hair out of her eyes, tight with dread, her whole body sheened with sweat. Just as the back strap on her sandal started to chafe, the Procession shuffled to a stop. They had reached the Oracle.
Rattles, drums and zithers were silenced on one note. –’
“Hey what are you reading?” A voice cuts into your thoughts as you stop your reading abruptly.
You look up to see Yugi Muoto looking at you expectantly, as if for an answer. “The Oracle, it’s by Catherine Fisher.” You answer shortly and try to go back to your book.
Unfortunately Yugi doesn’t seem to notice this and responds to your answer. “Really is it good so far?”
“I wouldn’t know, I just started it.” You remark, you much want to add, ‘and I’d like to finish it so shut up’ but you are too polite to say anything of the sort.
“I see. I’m reading a book about Ancient Egypt and about the pharaohs. It’s really interesting so far.” Yugi tells you.
“That’s nice.” You reply and manage to read the next sentence of your book.
‘In the terrible still heat Chryse whispered, “My arms are burning.” ’
“Why are you so introverted all the time?” Yugi suddenly blurts out to you. You look up from your book, your face holds no emotion, and you simply stare at him for a few seconds. “I – I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you.” Yugi stutters.
“I’m not offended, but what possessed you to ask such a question?” Is your simple return.
“Well, I dunno, you always seem to keep to yourself during classes and you don’t really talk that much to any other students and when you do you never converse for long. You’re just so, well withdrawn, and I wondered why.” Yugi finishes his explanation quietly and focuses on the floor.
You take a deep breath, wondering how you should word this answer so as not to go into detail for your feelings about life and give him the other truthful reason behind your withdrawnness. Can you trust Yugi not to laugh at you if you do slipup in your answer? Something tells you that you can. But what and why? You have seen Yugi among his friends; he isn’t as shy as he has been at the beginning of tenth grade. Wait a minute, maybe you can bypass this question. With this thought you begin to form your answer.
“If I recall correctly, you were just as introverted at the beginning of this year. What were your reasons behind it?” You state waiting for Yugi’s response.
Yugi looks up at you, and in his eyes, you can see that he understands the meaning behind your comment. You want to make an exchange of information, but he has to go first. “I, well, I was shy, and nobody seemed interested in any of the games I played or what I said, except Tea Gardner, she’s been my friend since elementary school. That’s when I met Joey Wheeler and Tristan Taylor; they picked on me because they thought I was a pushover and needed to toughen up. Eventually we became friends and they were probably part of the reason I’m less introverted now.” Yugi relates his past to you.
“I see.” You comment, so there lay his reasoning – interesting.
“And you?” Yugi asks.
Boy is he ever persistent, you note. “I tend to keep to myself, mainly because I find that life is pointless. I’m not suicidal, I just can’t seem to find life interesting and therefore it is pointless to share such knowledge with anybody, as who would care?” Your choice of words leaves much to be desired but they are the only thing you can come up with at this particular moment.
“Why don’t you make friends? Life is fun when you have somebody to hang out with!” Yugi suggests smiling. What was this, twenty questions?
Great, the one question I don’t have an answer to! What am I supposed to say? This is not my day, you think as you try to construct an answer for Yugi. Finally you decide to go on impulse and hope you won’t regret it later. “Friends are the same as the rest of things in life. Bland and overrated.”
“How can you say that? Have you ever had a friend?” Yugi asks calmly, but you can sense a hint of offense in his voice. You mentally sigh, why can’t I ever win?
“No, but what proof do you have that I would not find them as dull as everything else in this life?” You reply. How did this conversation go from you being too introverted to why you find life boring? You are now disclosing too much information, and to whom? Yugi Muoto of all people.
Yugi sighs, “Just because. Listen (Your first name), why don’t you come hang out with my friends and me for the week? Come on, please? That’ll be the final sentence of my explanation and if you don’t like it; I won’t touch on the subject again. Please?”
“Hmm…” You reply as you think it over. Pros and cons? Let me see...
Cons:
1. I’d be forced to disclose even more information about myself.
2. They might be really annoying and/or pushy
3. Being seen with one of the most popular groups in school, would tarnish my invisibility here…ah but what do I care, it’s not as though I like it or hate it.
4. I could get hurt emotionally
Pros:
1. Yugi’s one of the only people who has ever actually noticed me and been nice.
2. I might actually like them…oh that’ll be the day.
3. My mom would be ecstatic that I actually have a friend or two…why do people hate the fact that I’m so introverted anyways?
4. Maybe this will have a point, it will give me something to do other than read books and do schoolwork…
Yep, that worked, the pros and cons are even…joy. You think to yourself as you realize Yugi is staring at you in anticipation. How long was I in space for? You think, as you get ready to answer Yugi.
