Starting To Rain
Disclaimer: I do not own Fruits Basket nor do I own Pam Thum or any of her song lyrics.
A/N: This is a one-shot. There is no particular pairing for this fic, as you read it, I’d like you to examine the characters’ actions etc. closely and then when you review tell me what you thought the pairing was and why….I’m curious!

Plink. A drop of rain fell into a nearby puddle as you watched the ripples flowing slowly towards the outside of the puddle. The ripple was a lot like your life. Every action you created gave out its consequences; ripple after ripple and one thing led to another. You sighed as another water drop fell onto your shoulder; it was starting to rain in your life and washing away everything in its path. Last month the first drop had fallen, and you had gotten laid off – there had gone your job and now you were in search of a new one. The second drop had fallen in remembrance of your late mother; who had been driven by cancer to her death. And now the third drop would finally fall today, as you would soon find out. The last thing you clung to would push everything a little to far; and there it would fall. A flashflood would sweep your memories away forever – from the entire world. Washing everything clean, letting you start anew…
Let’s start our story with the first drop, shall we?

Rainy nights began to let you look forward to something – the dawning of a new day. Where everything had a clean slate, where you could finally find happiness and where new lessons could be learned and taken to heart. You sighed, you loved when it rained, but right then you just wanted to cry. You took a deep breath as you pushed the tears back and clutched your hands together over your heart – almost as if praying for a miracle. Slowly you brought your hand up to the office door to knock as you assured yourself that there was nothing to worry about. You hadn’t done anything wrong, it was probably just something minor. Come on, (Your first name); don’t be such a wuss, so your boss wants to see you, what could be so bad about that? You questioned yourself logically – but it didn’t make you feel any better.
~My heart is still silent
Hot dry winds
Have carried away my tenderness
Once again
There’s thunder in the distance
I cry for rain~
You knocked; hearing the hollow sound of your knuckles on the door made you even more nervous. “Come in.” That did it, now you just wanted to melt down onto the ground and turn into jelly. Or maybe you already had? Your hand clenched the doorknob as you turned it and walked into your employer’s office. “Sit down.”
“Yes, Tazuki-sama.” You replied as you fashioned yourself hurriedly into one of the light blue chairs on the opposite side of his desk. “What did you want to see me about sir?” You held your breath as you waited for the answer – whatever it was going to be.
“As you already know (Your last name)-san, this company has suffered great damages after a fire in one of our outlet stores last week.” Mr. Tazuki said grimly. This was not looking good, you gritted your teeth so hard you were sure they’d break from the pressure that was being put on them.
“Yes, but what about the insurance companies sir? Won’t they pay for more than half of it?” You questioned respectfully, almost to the point of shaking visibly.
~I’m thirsty for deliverance
To restore my faith~
“Regrettably, (Your last name)-san, one of the insurance companies recently went bankrupt and it happened to be the one who held the biggest insurance share in this company. As an unfortunate side effect, we’ve had to lay off a number of workers.” Your eyes widened as you held back tears; you knew what was to come. “I’m terribly sorry (Your last name)-san – here is your official notification.”
You took a deep breath as well as the white envelope, which contained an official notice of when and why you were laid off. “Thank you for the personal notification sir.” You bowed your head as you stood up and walked out of the office, as soon as the door closed, you burst into tears and ran. You ran all the way back to the main house.

~I feel hope in the air
See your love everywhere
The water of life is beginning to fall~
“(Your first name)-chan!” A small, blonde haired boy with bright and shining eyes ran up to you excitedly as you entered through the main gates whilst drying your tears. You looked at the little boy who was running excitedly towards you – Momiji Sohma. What was he doing here?
You kept your calm demeanor up as you opened your arms to hug the little boy tightly, “Hello Momiji-kun.”
“Momiji-kun!” You heard a second voice, and rolled your eyes whilst smiling slightly. Yep, that was Hatsuharu Sohma; he was babysitting Momiji apparently. You were more than willing to bet Momiji had run away from Hatsuharu just for the fun of it. These two were the only ones who could cheer you up this immensely when you were feeling down. You shook your head at the boy in your arms. You were a distant relative of the Sohma family, which was why you had a different last name – the distance was extreme, but yet you found yourself able to hug the zodiac members (at which Momiji was thrilled). You visited the main house often as your boyfriend lived there. Nineteen-year-old Akito Sohma.
“Hatsuharu-kun,” You addressed the second boy, “It’s nice to see you – I believe I have what you’re looking for.” You held out a squirming Momiji to the Ox of the zodiac. Whilst Momiji was the same age as Hatsuharu, he was quite a bit more childish at fifteen then his black and white haired cousin. It seemed someone always had to watch Momiji to make sure he didn’t make too much trouble.
“But (Your first name)-chaaaan!” Momiji whined, “He’s being meaner than Kyo-kun!”
“Really?” You questioned now fully smiling, “and what’s Hatsuharu-kun doing that’s sooo evil?” You threw a glance at Hatsuharu who was standing there looking smug.
“Not taking me to see Tohru-chan!” Momiji whimpered at you. You shook your head at the both of them; they were so amusing. You had originally come to see Akito-kun but after being bombarded by Momiji and Hatsuharu you didn’t really feel the need to anymore. Normally seeing Akito was able to cheer you up, but Momiji and Hatsuharu had done a fine job of it already, so you didn’t want to disturb Akito; who was undoubtedly plotting something right about now. You smiled at the thought and shook your head. Sometimes you couldn’t understand why you loved him.
“Momiji-kun, did you ever think that maybe Honda-san is busy or out of the house right now?” You had met Tohru once, but didn’t know her that well, although you had to admit that she was an extremely nice girl and had great skill when it came to cooking. You still couldn’t see why Akito disliked her so.
“Noooo, but I want to see Tohru-chan!” The half German boy complained as you smiled and put him on the ground and then crouched to talk to him.
“Momiji-kun, how’s about I promise to take you to see Honda-san tomorrow if you promise to behave for Hatsuharu-kun, until Hatori-san comes to take you home?” After finishing your suggestion, and hearing Momiji respond with a thrilled ‘yeah!!!!’ as he ran off; you noticed Hatsuharu-kun looking at you suspiciously.
“Yes, Hatsuharu-kun?” Your eyebrows furrowed as you tried to figure things out. Why on earth was he looking at you as if you had just sold your soul to the devil?
“Are you going insane (Your first name)-chan?” You frowned more than you had been as Hatsuharu continued. “Have you ever taken Momiji-kun anywhere? Especially to Shigure-san’s house; him and Kyo-kun don’t get along well. I hope you know just what you’ve gotten yourself into.” Hatsuharu finished as he turned away and started to walk as you yelled something to him.
“I’m sure I can handle anything life (or Momiji-kun) throws at me! Thank you for the warning Hatsuharu-kun!” You saw him turn around and smile and wave to you as you waved back. Unfortunately, you didn’t catch what he murmured to himself after that.
“I really hope so, (Your first name)-chan. Taming Akito-sama was one thing, but Momiji-kun at Shigure-san’s is another…”

And wash away the pain
Inside of me~

“Let’s go (Your first name)-chan! Let’s go!” An excited Momiji pulled you out of the main gates with Hatsuharu waving at the both of you and smiling to himself. He was getting a break from Momiji, why shouldn’t he be happy? You pulled on your electric blue jacket as you ran to catch up with Momiji. Today seemed to be a lot better than yesterday had been. You had been able to forget about your job (or lay off to put it more bluntly) and just enjoyed the time you were able to spend with Momiji and now you were able to go and catch up with Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo – you hadn’t seen them in forever.
“Alright, wait up Momiji-kun! I’m coming!” You shouted as you ran down the street after the fifteen-year-old boy. Finally catching up with Momiji, you both had to stop at an intersection, to wait for the light to change. What do you like so much about Honda-san anyways, Momiji? You wondered to yourself. You weren’t jealous or anything, no, that wasn’t it. You just couldn’t see what was so great about Honda-san, I mean, she was nice and all and you liked her, but just what was so special about her to Momiji?
You walked the rest the way to Shigure’s not caring that Momiji was miles ahead of you. You arrived at Shigure’s house as you saw Momiji reaching the door and you ran to catch up to him. Shigure opened up the door just as you were in the middle of the walkway. You had called yesterday and set up a visit for three pm; you checked your watch, as usual you were on completely punctual. “Hello (Your first name)-chan! Hello Momiji-kun!” Shigure greeted you both as Tohru Honda appeared with Shigure at the front door.
“Oh hello (Your last name)-san, Momiji-kun! It’s so nice to see you both again!” Tohru bowed in greeting as you bowed back and Momiji just rushed towards Tohru and jumped on her, turning himself into a rabbit. Yuki and Kyo appeared sweat-dropping profusely at Momiji. You knew exactly what they were thinking – where the heck did he get all his energy from?
“Hello Shigure-sensei, Yuki-kun, and Kyo-kun.” You waved as Yuki greeted you back and Kyo just grunted at you.
“Well come inside (Your first name)-chan, wouldn’t want you to catch a cold out here, now would we?” Shigure invited as Momiji had already run ahead of you, a few minutes before, into the house. You nodded as you hurried up the pathway and into the house. “Tohru-chan is making some tea at the moment (your first name)-chan, but will be with us shortly,” Shigure informed you as you sat down with him and Yuki at a living room table and cushions.
“Alright,” You replied as Tohru appeared with cups and a steaming teapot full of tea. “Hello Honda-san.”
“Hello, chai tea is alright, (Your last name)-san?” Tohru asked as you nodded a yes as she set the tray on the table and set up the saucers and cups.
“So (Your first name)-chan, what have you been up to lately?” Shigure made a move at starting a rather interesting discussion whilst Tohru poured everyone some tea. Well, except for Kyo-kun and Momiji-kun – the two were nowhere in sight, and you bet that any minute now you would hear Momiji-kun calling for help and complaining that Kyo-kun was being a meanie.
“Well, I’m looking for work as I was laid off yesterday and that’s about all right about now.” You informed them calmly as you took a sip of your tea.
“Oh, I’m sorry (Your first name)-chan!” Shigure cried dramatically as a knock was heard at the door. Shigure stopped his dramatics for moment to inquire loudly, “Why whoever could that be?” You sighed as you shook your head and got to answer the door sending Yuki a look and he got up to come with you to answer the door, leaving poor Tohru to deal with the overdramatic Shigure.
“I wasn’t aware we were expecting any visitors except for you and Momiji-kun…” Yuki trailed off, leaving you to question Shigure’s moment of weirdness carefully.
“Say, Yuki-kun, what’s up with Shigure-sensei? He’s acting less than normal today.” You wondered.
“Honestly, I don’t know, I think it may be the new novel he’s starting, he seems very excited about it.” Yuki responded as you both reached the door and Yuki reached up and pulled it open. The person standing there revealed to be none other than Yuki’s older brother, whom you had noticed he had a certain loathing for. Ayame Sohma.
“Why little brother –” Ayame was cut off by the slamming of the door in his face as Yuki turned around sweat-dropping and walked off muttering something about unwelcome guests.
You reopened the door almost instantaneously, “I’m so sorry Ayame-san.” You bowed lightly and invited him in.
“Why dear (Your first name)-chan, whatever are you doing here?” Ayame threw his arms in the air dramatically as you sweat-dropped at his actions.
“I’m visiting Shigure-sensei with Momiji-kun. And I don’t mean to be rude, but what on earth are you doing here? Shigure-sensei didn’t mention he was expecting you. Nevertheless follow me – Honda-san just served the tea.” You informed him rapidly and then realized you were sounding like you owned the place and turned around and apologized for your statements.
“Don’t worry about it (Your first name)-chan! You’re too cute for anyone to stay mad at or even get cross with! I’m here to see my little brother Yuki-kun and meet with Shigure-san!” Ayame’s golden eyes sparkled with silver as he whirled around in the hallway with copious arm gesture explaining to all the world his reason of being.
